August 2023 Yin Yang

Theresa Mozzocci | AUG 5, 2023

Last month I took continuing yoga teacher training to become certified in the practice of Yin, Restorative and Nidra Yoga. These three practices are thought of more as therapeutic yoga versus the physical yoga we practice in a typical vinyasa flow class. Yin targets the deep connective tissues, like fascia, ligaments and joints. Restorative yoga is a restful practice that is focused on slowing down and opening the body through passive stretching. Nidra yoga is a meditative practice that brings the body and mind into a deeply relaxed state with the intention of staying awake.

All three of these therapeutic practices are slower and more meditative (to varying degrees). They allow us to turn more inward, tuning into our mind and body while opening up any blockages and releasing our energy to flow freely. All three are more mellow and low-energy, a nice complement to our more dynamic, active practices that are designed to work our muscles. They are an excellent antidote for depression, stress & anxiety and those recovering from injuries or illnesses.

Yin and Yang energy coexists in every aspect of our daily lives; there is never one without the other. The balancing act of yin and yang energy can bring harmony on your mat and in your daily life. Yin is more internal, passive, cooling and downward. Yang is more external, dynamic, warming and upward.

At Satsanga Yoga we build habits that last a lifetime; that help us create balance in our lives.

Class Highlight: Start the month with a Yin & Yang yoga class. On August 2nd take a class that blends two styles of yoga into one practice – bringing together the benefits of passively holding yoga poses with more dynamic sequences and standing postures.
