February 2024 - Building your foundation

During the past month, I have been teaching a beginner’s yoga workshop – and stressing the importance of a good foundation. The best way to start anything is to set a strong foundation. Without a solid foundation in your yoga pose, you have a difficult time being able to achieve lift or length. A good foundation, on the other hand, provides the same thing for your body that is does for a building, the support you need to go up and out.
Setting your foundation can also mean setting an intention for each pose. It can mean becoming conscious of why you practice yoga. It can mean opening yourself to the experience of each pose without goals or pre-conceived notions.
This goes the same for new situations in life. It's about finding that safe, comfortable place everywhere. When you have a strong foundation, you are safe. You are grounded. And that strong foundation is always there. Life is changing all the time, constantly throwing us curve balls. Just when we think we’re ready to coast for a while, something inevitably happens, and we have to re-assess “the plan”. Life is a whole lot of transitions strung together. And at times it’s hard to find the foundation in the transition. Don’t get so swept away in the action of it all that you lose your connection. Come back to Earth, and ground into it. It's with our strong foundation that we all rise up.
