Many of us have found yoga because we know it can improve flexibility, improve our balance and increase our strength. Another benefit of yoga is it helps develop inner awareness – it focuses our attention on how our body feels at the present moment. When I teach in a studio, I have my students turn away from any mirrors in the room. This is so they can focus their awareness inward, how the pose feels on their body rather than how the pose looks. Our mind-bodies are continually changing based on how we live, think, feel and act and how our environment affects us. By practicing yoga regularly, it can bring us into the moment, cultivating inner peace, physical and emotional balance and expanding our consciousness.

When we add prana – the life force that we cultivate through the breath – this helps us unify the body and mind. Awareness of breath establishes you in the present moment. Breath is also a powerful tool to help you become more aware of your thoughts. It helps calm the mental thought loops that create anxiety; allowing yogis to live in conscious awareness. When we pay attention to our own internal feedback, we can enhance our emotional intelligence and carry this wisdom into the world in a manner that enhances our health and relationships.

Quiet your mind, bring your awareness inward and just enjoy your flow. After a long day with family or at work – sometime we just need to make it to our mats and flow with the Satsanga Yoga community.
