Practicing Yoga in the Summer

Summer is officially here - It brings with it longer days and shorter nights. Our schedules are filled up with barbeques and trips to the beach. This year it also brought the heat. Practicing yoga when it is hot outside (and maybe inside) has lots of benefits. The heat helps warm up the muscles, making it easier to stretch and move into poses. This can potentially lead to greater flexibility and a deeper range of motion. It can also improve our circulation – the heat causes blood vessels to dilate, improving circulation and delivering more oxygen to the muscles. Another physical benefit is increased detoxification. Sweating more on your mat can help flush out toxins from the body.

Heat can also come with risks that you may not normally face as you practice yoga. The intense heat and excess sweating can lead to dehydration. It is crucial to drink plenty of water before, during and after a yoga session. Anytime we work out in heat can lead to heat exhaustion. It is important to listen to your body and take more breaks. It is also important to remain mindful of your capabilities and not push your body beyond its limits or overstretching beyond your normal range.
When you join Satsanga Yoga this month remember drink plenty of water before and during class; wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing to help manage sweat and keep you comfortable; acclimate to the heat before you start moving and most importantly, be mindful of your body’s signals and take breaks as needed. Child’s pose and savasana can help you cool down if you feel overwhelmed.
