Summer Heat & the Art of Cooling

Theresa Mozzocci | JUL 1, 2025

Summer invites play, vitality, and expansion – but it can also leave us feeling overheated, overstimulated, and depleted. In the yoga tradition, summer aligns with the Pitta dosha, which governs fire and transformation. Too much heat – inside or out – can create irritability, burnout, and physical exhaustion.

The good news? Yoga offers tools to help you cool down, stay centered, and enjoy summer with more ease.

· One of the quickest ways to calm the body is through pranayama or breath control. Roll the tongue like a straw and inhale slowly and then exhale through the nose. This breath cools the body, soothes the nervous system and reduces excess internal heat.

· Add some cooling poses: forward folds (i.e. child’s pose); supported bridge or legs up the wall; reclining twists, wide-knee seated poses (i.e. Baddha Konasana).

· Use visualization & intention to cool from within. Imagine a waterfall, a cool breeze or floating on a lake. End your practice with the mantra: “I am calm, I am cool, I am content”

· Drink lots of water

When Pitta is in balance, we feel focused, joyful, and driven. Thankfully, yoga offers us powerful tools to cool the body, quiet the mind and restore our sense of ease.

Join Satsanga Yoga for an online class (live or video) to let yoga be a sanctuary that restores -- not drains – you. Let your breath lead the movement, and avoid pushing to the edge.
