Transitions

I am about to close a major chapter in my life and begin a new one. We all have to move forward with new chapters, like it or not, it’s part of life. I am moving cross-country to be closer to family. While sad about the chapter that is closing – I am excited about the new adventures ahead of me. It is all about the journey!

As I prepare for this big move, I find myself pondering transitions, shifts and changes of all kinds. Change is hard and most of us resist any change. I am lucky, I got to choose this big change in my life – often we don’t get to choose what life brings our way.

It is often said that when we’re on our mats practicing asana, the way we transition between poses is as important as the poses themselves. We need to bring presence of mind to the entire journey, rather than just to what we may perceive as joyful stopping points along the way.

Practicing yoga poses with awareness teaches us to listen to what’s going on with ourselves mentally, emotionally and physically on any given day and to let go of attachments to what we think we should be experiencing.

Often when we are off our mats, in our daily life, we can easily get so focused on the destination – we lose all sense of joy in the journey. The destination is a fixed-dot, the journey connects the dot. It has been said that if you want to really know someone, learn about his/her journey not their achievements.

Come anchor yourself within the present moment with some deep nourishing breaths. Practice celebrating change on the small stuff in order to get comfortable with shifting life transitions.
